To carry out an “ambitious improvement program” for the course and facilities, scheduled to last six months starting this spring, the North Course at Monte Rei Golf & Country Club, in Vila Nova de Cacela, will be closed between April and September.

The new investment cycle at this Algarve resort was announced by DETAILS – Hospitality, Sports & Leisure, Arrow Global’s asset management platform in Portugal and current managing entity of Monte Rei.

According to DETAILS, the goal is to “protect and enhance its legacy, reinforcing standards of quality, sustainability, and long-term resilience.”

Following a detailed analysis of the North Course—designed by legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, winner of 18 Major championships—as well as its supporting infrastructure, the decision was made to close the 18-hole course.

During this period, the works will include landscape restoration, modernizing the irrigation system and pumping station with a focus on water efficiency, and a series of targeted course upgrades, such as green reconstructions, bunker renovations, and the resurfacing of buggy paths.

Upgrades are also planned for the practice facilities, including the practice tee and training technology, alongside the implementation of quieter and more sustainable maintenance operations supported by modern equipment.

According to Nuno Sepúlveda, co-CEO of DETAILS, “Monte Rei is already one of the finest golf courses in Portugal and Europe, something we deeply respect.”

“This project is built on a long-term vision: protecting the character and playability that members and visitors value, while introducing thoughtful improvements that will allow the course to thrive for decades to come,” he added.

“As the management entity, our role is to ensure that Portugal’s premier golf courses, especially heritage ones like Monte Rei, are preserved and enhanced through conscious evolution, without compromising their core essence. When Monte Rei reopens, it will be stronger, more resilient, and better prepared for the future,” Nuno Sepúlveda further stated.

Nestled in the hills of the eastern Algarve, in the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, Monte Rei is “recognized as one of the most iconic golf resorts in the country and is frequently named the best course in the Algarve,” highlights the management company.

Beyond golf, the resort offers a complete lifestyle experience, featuring high-end dining, 24-hour concierge service, a heated pool, a gym, tennis courts, and a children’s area. Accommodations include luxury apartments and villas tailored to various guest profiles.

This renovation program forms part of a broader strategy by Arrow Global Portugal, centered on responsible and sustainable investment across its portfolio managed by Norfin, as well as the tourism assets managed by DETAILS.

Monte Rei Golf & Country Club is part of the portfolio managed by DETAILS, which currently oversees the operations of 23 hotels, 12 golf courses, a sports center, an equestrian center, and several dining venues across Portugal.
